Windsurfing and Conditions

Windsurfing conditions in the Red Sea, Egypt

Windsurfing is possible in winds from near 0 to 50 knots, the ideal planing conditions for most recreational athletes though is 15-25 knots or 4 Bft to 6-7 Bft, with lighter winds resulting in displacement mode sailing. Wind strength in Egypt varies on the location and time of year, and best wind conditions start from 4 Bft and go up to 7 Bft, with best conditions usually from May to November.

If you accidentally fall from the board, at least you will fall into warm water: the water temperature goes down to around 21 degrees in the winter and up to a comfortable 29 degrees in the late summer months.

Ideally, beginner should look for a shallow lagoon with sandy bottom, sheltered from the waves. Coral reefs, rocks and other objects in the water that are close to the water surface can be dangerous. You also want to have an extensive area where to practice, without compromising the safety of snorkellers, swimmers or other water sports enthusiasts such as kiters and water skiers. Make sure your chosen centre will offer these conditions.

More advanced windsurfers might want to venture a bit offshore to seek some waves and to gain speed, also in this case watch out for offshore sandbanks or coral reefs. Remember that some days, the wind might blow too strong and the waves become too high, so it is wise to stay in the sheltered area.
